Nothing has received more hype lately than Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. The first book in the popular series was published in 2005, but the series didn’t take off until recently, seeing a huge increase in popularity in the past year. The series consists of four books: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.
Throughout the series, a romance between human Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen develops as they face the drama that accompanies their relationship. There have always been romance novels and far-fetched fantasies, but Twilight fans all agree that there is nothing like this series.
In November 2008, Twilight, the first book in the series, came to movie theaters worldwide with much excitement. However the hype did not compare to the even bigger debut of New Moon this past November. Diehard fans bought their tickets for the midnight premiere in August and lined up outside theaters hours before the movie even started.
So what is so special about this series that drives fans, from ages 13 to 30, to go to extreme means to show their devotion?
“Its such a remarkable love story,” said Summer Handzlik, a 23-year-old Medaille graduate who currently works in the College Relations department. “It’s the most epic love story since Titanic.”
Handzlik confessed that she went to the midnight premiere of New Moon and that she arrived at the movie theater four hours before the movie started.
Freshman Nicole Bennett and junior Jasmine McCoy aren’t crazy fans but they understand the hype that has surrounded Twilight. “If that’s what they (the fans) want to do, then I don’t care,” said Bennett. She also added that Twilight is worthy of the publicity it has received.
All the build up of the movies has inspired people to read the books and take an interest in the series. “Everyone I know that went to go see it (New Moon) liked it, and I would like to see it because of all the hype it’s getting,” said McCoy.
There’s just something about the story that appeals to girls young and old, whether it’s the unexpected exciting plot, or the sheer love you feel when you read the book and connect with the characters. Twilight isn’t just a “tweeny” love story or a passing fad. It’s a movement.
Edward and Bella will go down in the books next to Elizabeth and Darcy (Pride and Prejudice), Jack and Rose (Titanic), and Noah and Ally (The Notebook) as one of the greatest love stories of all time.
