The holiday season is a time for giving and receiving gifts. This year at Medaille College, there are several ways in which students can help out those who are less fortunate.

The college radio station, WMCB, is raising money to help Harvest House this month. Harvest House is a community and spirituality center that runs retreats for teenagers, families, schools, etc.

A big outreach program each year for Harvest House is their partnership with the Baby and Children Ministry. They raise money to
help families purchase cribs, strollers and clothes among other items.

In an effort to help this cause, WMCB has placed plastic baby bottles around campus, in which students are asked to put their loose change. All funds raised go to Harvest House.

Jackie Guglietta, president of SAB and staff writer for the Perspective, organized her own fundraising campaign this year. She’s working to raise money for the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) through a program called Change Angels. This organization helps all different types of animals that are homeless by taking care of them until they are adopted.

“The reason why I’m doing it is because I’ve always had a strong passion for animals and I’m trying to help out those in need anyway I can,” said Guglietta.

“Medaille students can help by donating their loose change from their purses, backpacks, even from in the couch. It is a really great cause to help out, so please get the word out and help the SPCA,” she said.

The Medaille Chapter of Alpha Chi, a national honor society, is keeping with the motto “Making Scholarship Effective for the Good.”

They are organizing and recruiting the college community and the community around Buffalo, asking students and local businesses to come together for the holiday toy and book drive.

“In keeping with (Alpha Chi’s) theme, as well as with Medaille’s identity as ‘Buffalo’s College,’ the members suggested we begin working on community service projects,” said Kevin Bosner, advisor to Alpha Chi.

This drive was set up to benefit underprivileged children at Bethel Head Start Preschool.

The drive will run through December 11. They are looking for new or gently used books in the range of ten to twenty dollars. They will also accept money donations if you cannot get out to get a book or a toy.

Cardboard City, a program put on by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the second year in a row, aimed to raise awareness and funds for the homeless. “We think it’s important to raise awareness and help students realize how lucky we are,” said
Dan Barancotta, president of SAAC. Students took turns sitting outside in a cardboard box, and over the course of the day raised $93 that was donated to the Buffalo City Mission.

Boxtown, a similar program that gave students insight into the life of the homeless, was put on for the first time by the Center of Multicultural Education and Diversity and Residence Life.
