James Faber, a junior criminal justice major at Medaille, was rewarded a $1,000 scholarship on December 4 from the local Western New York chapter of ASIS, the American Society for Industrial Security International.
According to the official ASIS website, the organization is “dedicated to increasing the effectiveness and productivity of security professionals through developing educational programs and materials that address broad security interests.”
Faber first learned about the scholarship from Ron Christopher, Director of Public Safety, who is on the ASIS board, and Frank Szczublewski, Clinical Assistant Professor.
“The WNY ASIS Chapter annually awards scholarships to criminal justice students enrolled in colleges and universities in the Western New York area,” said Christopher. “Professors in the criminal justice departments were contacted and asked to submit names of students who met the criteria, qualifications and would be good candidates.”
Szczublewski told Faber that he had a really good chance of winning, so he decided to apply.
Since Faber met the criteria and had “an excellent GPA,” he turned in one of the highly rated applications, said Christopher.
He was required to write an essay about his future plans after college. He won and then applied for a second scholarship, which he also won, doubling his scholarship money.

There were three winners in all -- two won the $500 scholarship and Faber won the $1000 scholarship.
He was not the only one at Medaille to receive this high honor. Two years ago Sharissa Terrell won a scholarship from WNY ASIS.
Faber completed his 90 hours of interning at public safety last year and is now a work-study student for public safety.
According to Catherine Buzanski, Director of Financial Aid, “There are a number of Medaille students receiving outside scholarships. Foundations, businesses, charitable organizations, as well as civic organizations and churches are known to distribute scholarships to students.” She suggests that students who are interested in learning about what scholarships are available should utilize to scholarship search engines like www.fastweb.com.
