Medaille’s first annual Winter Welcome week has come and gone.
Melisa Williams, Director of Student Involvement and Multicultural Education and Diversity, considered the first ever Winter Welcome weeks to be a success and is already looking into ideas for next year.
Williams brought this idea to the college, and she said that Winter Welcome week is exactly what it sounds like.
“We’re welcoming our returning students and our new students at Medaille. We want everyone to feel welcome,” she said.
The first two weeks back to school were loaded with activities, both on and off campus, targeting residents and commuters. Activities included ice-skating, snow tubing, movies, basketball games, a photo hunt of Elmwood Village, mall trips, helpful seminars, game nights, dancing and a club fair to show students how to get involved and get their money’s worth.
Students worried about getting their money’s worth during Winter Welcome week shouldn’t be. Any student who participated in all of the activities, which was almost 20, paid no more than a grand total of $23.00 to participate. Everything was free except the skates at the ice rink, the Sabres ticket and anything that was bought along the way, such as food or souvenirs.
Although the weeks of welcome are over, the college continues to develop new activities for students.
“Move It Mondays” are a fun and risqué way to get a work out and learn some hot new dance moves all in one night.
Over the Winter Welcome week students enjoyed a night of burlesques chair dancing. The following week the theme was belly dancing. Move It Mondays are going to be a regular event this semester.
Students who enjoyed any of the activities that went on this week should consider getting involved and using their input to improve the event next year, said Williams.
“Student input is the most important because it’s all for you,” she said. Williams is open to suggestions and changes. Students who would like to get involved are encouraged to stop by the Center of Multicultural Education & Diversity or Melisa’s office.
