Rocktoberfest reveals the difficulty in arranging events on campus

Medaille College sits in the center of the city of Buffalo. The enormous SUNY Buffalo campus isn’t far, the historic Buffalo State campus is right along Elmwood, and Canisius College is right next door.

These schools and the events that they put together are often discussed among Medaille students, who are then to likely start complaining about how Medaille never does anything cool or has anything fun to look forward to.

This is where the Student Activities Board, among other organizations, helps us out, or at least does their best to try.

On Thursday, October 1, the stage was set for one of Medaille’s most highly anticipated events of the fall. It was the night of Rocktoberfest, and the Medaille student body was about to prove whether or not it was worth the immeasurable amounts of time and effort that SGA dedicated to making sure the event was perfect.

The students told them what kind of music they wanted, so they found a talented and energetic band. The weather threw them a curve ball, so they set up a powerful heating system.

As show time drew near, the crowd in the tent grew larger. Students were showing up; it was going to be a big night at Medaille College.

Well, not exactly. Once again, Medaille students showed everyone the real reason why nothing big ever happens at Medaille: students simply won’t participate.

Flocks of students, immediately after taking their free T-shirts, decided that they had better things to do, and left (or they just sat around in the dorms pretending they had better things to do).

While many students remained, and the band went on to start the party that was promised, SGA organizers couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Those who were there enjoyed it. So why is no one giving these events a chance?

What happened that night was both discouraging and revealing. Medaille may not be a big college with big-time events, but the students certainly aren’t helping bring this place to life.
