The women’s basketball team has started their season off on a positive note. The women are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
They have seven returning players, one transfer and five freshmen on the team.
“This season we’ve brought a lot of experience back,” said captain Mandy Sahhar. “We have a lot of newcomers that are making an impact early. We’re looking to be a force in the conference and surprise a lot of people. Overall the season is going very well and it is a definite team effort all the way around.”
The Lady Mavs started off the season with non-conference games in which they played well. They played strong offensively and had to work against aggressive defenses.
The next two games were played in Boston; the first game was against Fitchburg State and the second was against Endicott College.
Junior guard transfer student Meghan Dougherty had a strong game against Fitchburg State and ended up scoring a lay up and a free throw in the final minute. The final score was 53-52 in favor of the Mavs. Freshman Susanne Black has been a good addition to the team by being strong down low for the women.
During the Endicott game, the girls rallied back but fell short by six points. They were down twenty into the second half. The team helped bring each other back to have a chance to win the game. This is the only loss on the season so far.
The first conference game was against La Roche College. Once again Dougherty and Black helped the team pull ahead in the second half. The game was close in the first half in which Medaille was leading by five points. Kacie Mills and Tanisha Travis also contributed nine points each during the game.
The women also played a conference game against Penn State Behrend. This game was a tight defensive game for both teams. Senior guard Tiffany Sullivan had a strong game. Sullivan helped lead the team to victory but this was not an individual effort. All the women played a good game helping them to a victory.
Overall the team chemistry the team is very high. The women get along with each other which helps them to win games. There are players who stand out during the games but it is not all about them, it’s about the team.
“Our goal is a championship and we won’t accept anything less,” said Sahhar. This is looking to be a good possibility but the women will have to keep working as a team.
