It’s basketball season once again, and the reigning AMCC champs are in search of another championship. Picked as this year’s favorite the Mavs brought back 13 players from last year’s roster.

A more “physical and determined” team is what separates this year’s team from last year, according to junior forward, Ron Malicki.

The team has a lot to live up to, as last years squad went 14-4 in the AMCC and 21-7 overall and also earned Medaille its first birth in the Men’s NCAA Tournament.

A quick start is what they got Friday, Oct 30, as they took on Brock University for the first exhibition game of the new season.

What was expected from the exhibition? “A win” says Dave Shuey, a sophomore transfer from Hilbert. “It wasn’t easy, it was a hard fought game but we executed and played to our abilities and those expectations were met.”

After Brock University they will have one final exhibition against Division 1 opponent Colgate University on Nov 12th. They face there first regular season opponent November 17th when they take on SUNY Geneseo in the Sullivan Center at 8pm.

Conference play opens a week later when La Roche comes to town. The game to see will come Nov. 30th as the Mavs take on fellow AMCC powerhouse Penn St. Behrend.

The team will also travel down to John Carroll University on Dec. 30th for a rematch of last year’s first round matchup in the NCAA Tournament.

The team loses two key members in Bill Gersitz and Jacob Reisdorf but they will look for key veterans to step in and play big roles as the Mavs will be tested early and often this season as defending champs. “The goal for the season is AMCC champs” says Junior Guard Ricky Reed.

On top of all the talent the team has this could turn into a very successful season.

The AMCC has listed two player’s to watch this season: Junior Guard Ricky Reed, who was named 2nd team all conference last season and Keith Hack who was 1st team all conference last season and was also named this season’s Preseason Player of the Year.

The Mavs look to get off to a fast start when SUNY Geneseo arrives November 17th.
